Work to sail - April - October 2017

Full moon over Preveza

I live on my 32-foot (10 m.) sailboat in the Ionian, Greece. I need some help with the boat to get it launched in the spring of 2017, which is mostly cleaning but also  anti-fouling. After about a week or ten days, we will go sailing.
I am looking for one  mature, non-smoking, addiction free, fit, agile and healthy person and especially someone who has some carpentry skills. Preferably a woman because there is not much privacy on board. This summer we will be repairing the teak deck. However, people with electrical, plumbing and varnishing skills are also welcome and there is always work available cleaning, sanding and painting. You should know how to use basic tools and have neat work habits.

Eidos in the boat yard
In exchange for 4 hours of work per day, I offer a berth and board. The boat is in a boat yard right now, but there are showers, toilets, laundry, and a free WiFi internet access and a book swap.
There is car transport every morning except Sunday to Preveza, the nearest town, which is about 10 minutes away, and there are two tavernas within walking distance. There are several beaches and a lagoon for nature walks nearby.
It's quite a busy place with many people arriving to work on their boats to launch or haul but not a lot to do in the evenings, so you need to be able to entertain yourself. Internet is available 24 hours a day in the community room.

Once the boat is launched, you can come sailing with me throughout the magical islands of the Ionian and perhaps even through the Corinthian Canal. We will visit village harbours with tavernas right next to our boat and quiet anchorages where we can swim in crystal clear water. There will be work to be done while we sail as well. If we are sailing, we will work only 2 hours per day and sometimes not at all if it is too hot and so I will ask for a contribution towards the expenses.
This offer is for people who are fit and like working outdoors, often in hot weather, doing energetic, physical labour in a methodical manner. You will be climbing ladders and using scaffolding while we are in the boat yard and climbing over the bow rail or into the dinghy while on the water.

How am I supposed to get on board?
I prefer volunteers who have some appropriate prior knowledge and experience and are able to work without supervision. Depending on the season and whether we are on land or on the water, tasks could include cleaning, polishing stainless steel and bronze, sanding, painting, varnishing, diesel engine maintenance, plumbing system maintenance, rigging, electrical wiring, carpentry, tiling, teak deck repair, and antifouling.
Shower on board

If you are an early riser, you will benefit because day on board begins early (around 6 a.m.) and you can be finished with your work before it gets too hot and have the rest of the day free. There is a ride to town from the boat yard at 10 a.m. every morning. After launching, we usually sail after lunch and stop in a harbour or at an anchorage in the afternoon.
The minimum stay is one week and volunteers do four hours of work per day in exchange for accommodation and meals.

Under sail.
Volunteers get a berth on the boat, shared accommodation. You can check here for more information about Eidos. Showers and toilets are in a building nearby while in the boat yard. When we are sailing, there is a toilet and solar shower on board. Many villages offer showers to boaters as well for a nominal fee.

There is free WiFi available in the common room as well as a book swap and laundry. Meals are provided (it helps if you eat a lot of fruit and salads as it is quite hot in summer to cook on board), and volunteers are expected to help with food preparation and clean up.
There are washing machines in the yard and often in some of the villages. Or we use a bucket for washing small items.

Please come with shoes, clothes and a hat suitable for work in the sun! If you are worried by bugs/insects, bring some insect repellent or a mosquito net. Also sun block. Also, you will need to show that you have your own health and accident insurance. I expect everyone who stays on the boat to keep their and common areas tidy and clean. There is a 50 euro security/damage deposit refundable on departure. Oh, and did I mention that smoking is not permitted on board?
You can get here by air (Aktio/Preveza airport), by ferry from Italy to Igoumenitsa or by bus from anywhere in Greece.
Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions.
