To a good friend - you know who you are

So you'd like to know what it's like being on my own, in a strange harbor, in a different land when the anchor is set and the sun is down...

For the most part it's magical and it looks something like the photo above - calm, warm, beautiful. I have so many photos of sunsets and sunrises it's amazing that I don't get bored with them, but I don't. Every time it's special.

After the anchor is set, I stow everything for the night just in case we have to leave in a hurry. Then, I get a glass of something to toast the sunset and watch the show.

In the Bahamas, there was always someone who would blow on the conch horn the moment the sun hit the horizon. I love rituals like that. In the morning, I love to play Mozart in the cockpit while I sip my coffee.

I find that people everywhere are friendly, kind and gentle if they're treated with respect and caring. And often they make life-long friends, even if we have never met outside of the Internet or never see each other again after meeting once. And if we do meet again, it's like family - as if we had never parted. The sailing and cruising community is like that.

The song that expresses my sentiments best is one written and sang by a fellow cruiser, Eileen Quinn, called "Friends". You can hear it here: http://cdbaby.com/cd/quinn4
I get tears in my eyes everytime I listen to it.

Thank you my friend - you know who you are.
