Ithaka in the distance |
My crew having left, I needed to get used to sailing on my own again.
This morning, the wind was coming from the north, so I left the anchorage in Ay Eufimia and headed towards the southernmost point of Ithaka. However, as soon as I came out of the protected bay, the wind shifted to south-east and exactly from the direction that I wanted to go. And there were even white caps on the sea!
Never mind, I raised the main with two reefs in it, partly unfurled the jib and prepared for a hard slog south. My course was not too bad, heading somewhat southerly and I managed to clear Ak. Dhekalia, the southern point of the bay.
But then, suddenly, the wind completely died. Nothing. Nada. Sails flapping and Eidos going in circles. So, with a lumpy sea left over from the morning wind, I couldn't do anything except turn on the motor and hope that the promised northerly would soon appear.

Pera Pigadhi anchorage |
I motored some more and soon came to Pera Pigadhi bay on the east coast of southern Ithaka. I have been here before, and knew that the best spot to anchor is between the island of Pera Pigadhi and Ithaka in relatively protected and shallow passage. I could see some boats there, but found the spot I wanted and dropped the hook. Soon some of the other boats left, and so, I settled in for the afternoon. Lunch, then a swim and a snorkel followed by a swing in the hammock. A very nice spot. I think I'll stay for the night.
It's a bit lonely sailing solo, but I managed to do all the work and didn't strain too much. Second reef in the main helped and the electric anchor windlass was definitely a good investment.
